Alexi Tuomarila is an award-winning Finnish jazz pianist, composer and bandleader based in Helsinki. His music combines lyrical melodies, rich harmonies and rhythmic intensity, with compositions that leave space for spontaneous ensemble interaction. In 2025, he was named Artist of the Year at the Pori Jazz Festival.

For more than twenty years, his trio with Norwegian bassist Mats Eilertsen and Finnish drummer Olavi Louhivuori has developed a shared musical language. They recorded Constellation for Jazzaway Records in Norway in 2006, and their Edition Records releases include Seven Hills (2013), Kingdom (2017) and Sphere (2019). Kingdom received four stars in The Guardian. Sphere earned five-star reviews in BBC Music Magazine and Finland’s Helsingin Sanomat, and won Finland’s Emma Award for Jazz Recording of the Year.

His 2024 album, Departing the Wasteland, expands the trio’s sound with guitarist André Fernandes and guest horns. Moving between intimate acoustic passages and expansive electric textures, it was an Editor’s Choice in the UK’s Jazzwise and was selected among Bandcamp Daily’s Best Jazz Albums of 2024.

Tuomarila worked with Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stańko for a decade, touring internationally in several of Stańko’s ensembles, including a week at Birdland in New York, the San Francisco Jazz Festival and the ECM Festival at the Shanghai Philharmonic. He plays on the ECM album Dark Eyes, whose track “Terminal 7” was featured in the TV series Homeland.

A graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, Tuomarila combines performing and composing with teaching jazz piano and pursuing artistic doctoral research at the Sibelius Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki.
