Suomen legendaarisimpiin jazzmuusikoihin kuuluva saksofonisti Eero Koivistoinen viettää parhaillaan 80-vuotisjuhlavuottaan. Loistavassa soittovireessä oleva maestro konsertoi timanttisen kvartettinsa kanssa Jyväskylän kaupunginteatterin pienellä näyttämöllä lokakuussa!

Koivistoisen yhtyeessä Suomen hienoimpiin komppipareihin lukeutuvan basisti Jori Huhtalan ja rumpali Jussi Lehtosen erehtymätön groove kuljettaa kokonaisuutta, jonka päällä ja kansainvälistä uraa louhivan Alexi Tuomarilan briljantti pianismi ja Koivistoisen väkevä saksofoni-ilmaisu nousevat uusiin korkeuksiin. Jyväskylän kaupunginteatterin pienen näyttämön konsertissa kuullaan kappaleita pääasiassa vuonna 2022 julkaistulta, erinomaisen vastaanoton saaneelta Diversity-albumilta.

Alexi Tuomarila Quartet, Budapest Music Center, Hungary

The Alexi Tuomarila Quartet brings together four distinctive voices from the Nordic jazz scene: Finnish pianist and composer Alexi Tuomarila, Norwegian saxophonist Bendik Hofseth, bassist Mikael Saastamoinen and drummer Markku Ounaskari. Tuomarila has built an international career as a pianist, composer and bandleader, with acclaimed releases on Edition Records. His album Sphere received a five-star review and Album of the Month from BBC Music Magazine and won the Finnish Jazz EMMA Award. In 2025, he was named Pori Jazz Artist of the Year. Tuomarila also performed and toured for a decade with legendary Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko.

Bendik Hofseth came to international prominence after succeeding Michael Brecker in the celebrated American group Steps Ahead, touring and recording with the band for several years. Markku Ounaskari is one of Finland's most internationally recognised jazz musicians, with an extensive discography including numerous ECM recordings. Mikael Saastamoinen represents a younger generation of Finnish improvisers and is known for his work with Linda Fredriksson, including the acclaimed Juniper project, and with Superposition.

Together, the quartet explores Tuomarila's compositions through a highly interactive approach, combining strong melodic and harmonic identities with openness, space and spontaneous interplay. The quartet recorded new music at Yle, Finland's national broadcasting company, with the resulting album scheduled for release in early 2027.

ALEXI TUOMARILA QUARTET, Koko Jazz Club Helsinki

Pianist Alexi Tuomarila performs at Koko Jazz Club with a world-class international quartet featuring American drummer Gerald Cleaver and Norwegian saxophonist Bendik Hofseth, together with a distinguished international bassist (TBA).

The programme consists mainly of Tuomarila's own compositions, alongside music from the catalogues of Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams and Andrew Hill, among others. The whole draws on the avant-garde jazz expression of the 1960s and on the "controlled freedom" aesthetic of the Miles Davis quintet, where the freedom of improvisation and clear formal structure live side by side. The band reinterprets this legacy in its own voice.

Gerald Cleaver is one of the most respected drummers in contemporary jazz and a key figure on New York's free improvisation scene. He moves widely across styles, and his playing is marked by exceptional sensitivity, rhythmic inventiveness and a bold, boundary-breaking approach. He has played with jazz legends such as Tommy Flanagan, Barry Harris and Ray Bryant, and alongside major figures of the AACM movement including Roscoe Mitchell, Muhal Richard Abrams, Wadada Leo Smith and Henry Threadgill. Cleaver stands at the crossroads of several creative music traditions.

Bendik Hofseth is one of Norway's most significant jazz musicians. He rose to international attention when he joined the legendary American band Steps Ahead as Michael Brecker's successor. Hofseth's expression moves freely at the interfaces of jazz, chamber music and modern musical language, and his playing is marked by a strong, expressive voice.

Keep North was born out of Lionel's project, MOTU, and has since forged its own identity. The trio strives to reveal the truth about improvisation, making a sometimes intimidating branch of jazz more accessible, communal, and groove-oriented.
